The Lantern Glade shimmered with excitement. Dozens of glowing orbs floated above the treetops, drifting like tiny moons waiting to be chased. The annual Twin Lantern Race was about to begin — a special event where elves raced in pairs.
Ella Tideborn bounced on her toes, her pink wings with white spots fluttering like excited butterflies. “Arthur! Arthur! We’re going to win this year, I can feel it!”
Arthur Brightwing laughed, ruffling her hair. His yellow‑and‑green wings shimmered with confidence. “We’re not just going to win,” he said with a grin. “We’re going to fly so fast the lanterns will think we’re chasing them.”
Ella giggled. “That’s because we are!”
The whistle blew.
Two lanterns — one pink, one green — shot into the sky, weaving between branches and spiralling toward the cliffs.
“Go!” Arthur shouted.
They launched into the air together.
🌿 The Chase
Arthur sliced through the air like a streak of sunlight, guiding their path. Ella followed close behind, her wings sparkling with determination.
“Left, Ella!” Arthur called.
“I know!” she replied — though she didn’t. She turned right.
Arthur looped around, laughing. “You’re supposed to follow the lanterns, not the squirrels!”
Ella stuck out her tongue. “The squirrel looked suspicious.”
They soared higher, weaving through branches, dodging drifting petals, and laughing the whole way. The lanterns danced ahead of them, teasing, daring them to fly faster.
Arthur caught up to the green lantern easily — but the pink one was Ella’s.
And it was fast.
“Come on, Ella!” he shouted. “Show it what you’ve got!”
Ella narrowed her eyes. “Oh, I will.”
She flapped her wings harder, her white spots glowing like tiny stars. The pink lantern zig‑zagged wildly, but Ella matched every twist, every turn, every loop.
“You’re doing it!” Arthur cheered.
Ella beamed. “I’m doing it!”
🌬️ The Wind Trick
Suddenly, a strong gust swept across the cliffs, pushing the lanterns apart.
Arthur steadied himself. “Ella! Use the wind — don’t fight it!”
Ella gulped. “But it’s scary!”
“You’ve got this,” Arthur said, voice warm and steady. “I’m right here.”
Ella took a deep breath.
She angled her wings just like Arthur taught her — catching the wind instead of resisting it. The breeze lifted her higher, faster, smoother.
She soared past the pink lantern.
“I DID IT!” she squealed.
Arthur whooped. “That’s my girl!”
Together, they swooped down, guiding both lanterns toward the finish line.
🏮 The Finish
The crowd erupted as Ella and Arthur crossed the glowing arch, lanterns floating proudly behind them.
Elder Thistlethorn clapped his hands. “A perfect partnership! Ella Tideborn, your wind‑riding was magnificent. And Arthur Brightwing — your guidance was flawless.”
Ella grabbed Arthur’s hand. “We did it together!”
Arthur smiled. “Always.”
The lanterns drifted down, circling the pair in a warm, shimmering embrace — a sign of honour.
Ella hugged her brother‑figure tightly. “Next year,” she whispered, “we’re going to fly even faster.”
Arthur grinned. “Next year, the lanterns won’t stand a chance.”
And as the glade filled with cheers, laughter, and drifting lights, the two young elves stood side by side — glowing brighter than any lantern in the sky.
