The morning mist still clung to the glade when Arthur Brightwing woke to the sound of laughter echoing through the trees.
The annual Lantern Chase was about to begin — a game where young elves raced to catch drifting lanterns before they floated beyond the forest’s edge.
Arthur stretched his yellow and green wings, feeling the familiar thrill of competition. He spotted Bear already polishing his scooter and Adeline weaving flower crowns for the spectators. “Last one to catch a lantern owes the winner a honey cake!” Arthur called, grinning.
The whistle blew, and the air filled with shimmering light. Dozens of glowing lanterns drifted upward, each carrying a tiny spark of Aberlady magic. Arthur darted between branches, his wings slicing through the mist. He caught one lantern, then another — but the third slipped away, carried by a mischievous gust toward the cliffs.

Without hesitation, Arthur chased it higher, the wind roaring past his ears. The lantern danced just out of reach, teasing him. He pushed harder, remembering Bear’s words: “Sometimes the wind isn’t your rival — it’s your ally.”

He angled his wings, caught the updraft, and soared. The lantern spun toward him, and with a swift dive, he snatched it mid‑air. The crowd below erupted in cheers as he descended, lantern glowing in his hands like a captured star.
Bear clapped him on the back. “You’ve got the heart of the wind itself, Arthur!”
Arthur laughed, handing the lantern to Adeline. “Maybe. But next time, I’m racing for two honey‑cakes.”
As the lanterns faded into the dawn, Arthur’s wings shimmered brighter than ever — proof that courage and joy could lift even the smallest elf higher than the clouds.
